November and December In Summary
The Charity Guys had a very busy November and early December with five major projects that were spearheaded. We focused on our jacket drive, blood drive, pet pictures with santa, moustache fundraiser and helping with building a school in Africa. Here’s the breakdown of how each project went:
Winter Jacket Drive
We split into two teams in the beginning of the month to get some friendly competition going on which team would be able to get the most jackets. As a result, we got over 20 garbage bags filled with jackets, clothing and shoes that were able to go directly to organizations in need. The jackets went directly to Our Place Society and clothing was distributed between Cool Aid Society and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria. We also want to do a shout out to the Vancouver Island Tech Park for their huge donation; you guys are awesome!
On December 4th, the Charity Guys got together with friends to give blood. This was the third blood drive we had done but we had many new faces come along that wanted to get involved. Lots of laughs were had and it was one of our best turnouts yet!
Pet Pictures with Santa
One Sunday, December 8th, Shatterbox Coffee Bar and Bosley’s on Yates teamed up to raise over $300 for Our Place Society by giving away hot chocolate and doing santa pet pictures just outside Bosley’s.
In the middle of November, Charity Guys undertook an ambitious project to help with prostate cancer research and awareness by doing something a bit different. We teamed up with local nightclubs Touch Lounge, Publik, the Strathcona Hotel, Paparazzi Nightclub and Darcy’s by getting them to dispense our magnificent moustaches for donations toward prostate cancer research and awareness. Moxies on Yates did an awesome job of making an event which was our most successful yet. A big thanks to Forbes Pharmacy for helping secure the moustaches too. In the end, we’d raised nearly $800 toward the cause, but we hope to double it next year with the lessons we’ve learned this time around.
Building A School In Africa
On November 30th, Shatterbox Coffee celebrated its first year anniversary by getting its closest customers to team up through a Change Heroes campaign to raise $10,000 to fund a school in Africa. They way it works is 33 people give $3.33 a day for three months and at the end, $10,000 is raised to have the school built. Kalen Harris, our fellow Charity Guy and owner of Shatterbox Coffee is giving his customers who chose to get involved in the campaign a free cup of coffee a day during the period as his way of saying thanks.
Now we’ll be winding down for the rest of the year but we’ll be back up again in early 2014. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
